Plus Fours
Plus fours may be the most ridiculous of the different types of trousers in our many-legged tour of the trouser world, but actually plus fours are extremely practical. Now more often seen on the golf course than the catwalks, plus fours were originally designed to allow greater freedom of movement during 17th century sporting activities. Plus fours traditionally reach four inches below the knee, the perfect length to allow you that killer swing to get your hole in one.
Jeans
From the ridiculous to the fashionable;jeans are another of our different types of trousers which started their life as a practical solution. Originally created to serve as durable legwear for cowboys, jeans have now become a fashion staple around the world! Jeans are the most enduringly popular of our different types of trousers and have been associated with youth subcultures for years. From the flares of the 60’s & 70’s to the skin-tight skinny jeans (see ‘Drainpipes’!) of the 80’s, every generation has its own different types of trousers styles for jeans!
Parachute Pants
Parachute pants might just be our favourite of the different types of trousers out there! Largely reserved for comedy purposes after their brief stint in the fashion spotlight during the 80s, parachute pants are becoming borderline cool again thanks to the fashion success of their close cousins: harem pants! More different types of trousers created with a practical purpose, parachute pants were originally created as durable, ‘slidey’ attire for breakdancing as they were made from long-lasting, slippery nylon! The key advocate for these very different types of trousers is of course, MC Hammer.
Drainpipe Trousers
Unlike different types of trousers, drainpipes are not made of any particular material. Instead, drainpipes are all about the fit. Drainpipes are known by many names, among the younger generations these different types of trousers are mostly known as skinny jeans but you might also come across extra-slim trousers called cigarette pants, pegs, stovepipes and skinnies. Every generation has had their own version of skinnies, and they are always associated with rock’n’roll! From Presley in the 50s, to the Rolling Stones in the 60s, teddy boys, glam rock stars, punk musicians, and the indie-rock contingent of the past two decades, different types of trousers in the ‘skinny spectrum’ have always been cool.
Cords
From the cool of skinny jeans, to the fuddy-duddy associations of corduroys. Long associated with musty professors and grandfathers, these different types of trousers have a distinctive cord-like pattern from their classic material which is made from twisted, woven fibres. Cords have a sheen about them as they are, essentially a form of velvet with ridges.
